I'll never forget the sights, smells and sounds that bombard the senses, when I first stepped foot outside the airport in Mexico City. I will also never forget the young kid who demanded 300 pesos from me as I sat in a yellow taxi outside the terminal. He thought he deserved the money because he was nice enough to slam my taxi door closed. I gave him. I do not think you fully appreciate how much is 300 pesos is actually worth on the streets of Mexico City. Anyway, I was only 19 when I first stepped foot in a city that has overwhelmed my senses before my plane even touched the ground. Fortunately, my foolish decision to choose a random taxi, which in some parts of Mexico City comes down to playing Russian roulette, not cost me anything more than a few extra dollars, and within 10 minutes, I was sitting on a bus that would take me deep into the southern Mexico. Five years and 17 countries later, I still remember the exciting day in Mexico City, when I officially came out of my comfort zone and dare to take risks and I immerse in the culture with which I was not familiar.
and talk with many foreign language students who want to travel and study or teach abroad. Unfortunately, most of them will never actually leave the country. Most have no idea where to begin the process of finding a school and moving to another country seems too overwhelming. Others are on the verge of leaving the country, but someone in the family convinces them to live abroad is too dangerous. Still others are excited about the idea, but it seems to them to financial and educational sacrifices are not worth the stay abroad. It was exhausting for me to think of all the enthusiastic people that I talked about who decided to continue studying abroad, or simply too hard. It is sad to think about all the people I spoke to who wished they had studied abroad, when the opportunity arose. If you have a chance, do not waste it. While it is important to consider the potential risks of traveling abroad, sometimes you just have to do it.
I have never used recruiting agencies. In general, I do not love them. Many of them will take your money and control over where you learn and how much you paid. People often ask me where I found such a good job of teaching. They assume that I had to do in Mexico and China, or that I was a recruiter to help me. In truth, I found a job by a simple search on Google and Yahoo. If you do not know where to start, simply pull up your favorite search engine and type in 'to teach English abroad. "You will be shown ads linking the major sites that employ the teachers, as well as small private schools that are seeking to make direct contact with prospective teachers. There really is no better way to find jobs but continue to perform your search.
Even if you do not know where you want to learn, looking for employment opportunities is the best way to learn more about the different regions. For example, if you see a school that interests you, check out some information about the location of the school. You should find out the size of the city, time, and the nearest embassy of the area, and anything else you want to know. It is also important to see what others are saying about the school. You can use the search engine to gather all this information.
I'm always willing to learn in smaller cities and private schools. less foreign contact that you have, the more you become immersed in the culture. If you want to learn Spanish or any other language, you must be in an area where you will be forced to use language. Teaching in a large university can be fun, but spend all their time with people who speak English are not going to help you pick up another language. Select the location where you feel safe, but where you can benefit the most from your experience abroad.
Finally, do not let that convince people that travel overseas is too dangerous for your own good. Remember that every time you step outside your front door, you are risking your life. Driving a car at your local highway or taking a jog through the city all involve potential risks. While it is important to be cautious and alert wherever you are, is also important not to let paranoia control your life. Sometimes the best experiences in life require us to step out of our comfort zone and do something that others consider to be insane. Do not be afraid to follow your heart's desire. Do your research and find a place that is right for you and then just that and never look back.
